Genesis Church Helps Students Stock Up
HOPE TWP. – After a difficult year navigating a pandemic, a local church is trying to help students prepare for their return to class this fall.
Hopewell’s Genesis Church provides supplies to needy students in the community, gathering the supplies needed to make the first day of school a smooth one. Taking donations from everything from pencils to calculators, this is the first time the church has organized a drive for school supplies for the community.
“We have been able to come into contact with some families over the past year,” said Madelyn Berkley, Trustee of Genesis Church. “With the school starting just around the corner, we thought it would be a great way to continue to reach out to the community and let them know that Genesis Church is there for them and that they can do it. facing all that this school year brings. “
The church had previously held similar food and Christmas gift drives during the pandemic, which helped 50 families make sure there were gifts under the tree last year. With the school year starting soon, they hope to help families struggling with the cost of supplies to keep their children successful.
So far, 28 students in the Hopewell area school district have requested school supplies from the church. Some of the most frequently requested items include calculators, pencils, binders, black expo markers, and pencils.
“It seems there is a need in the community and we hope to help as many families as possible,” Berkley said.
Genesis Church will accept requests for supplies and donations until August 15. The church hopes to help around 40 students, but if they receive more requests, they will create a waiting list for families in need. If they receive a surplus of supplies, they can also help other families before the start of the school year.
For those looking to go beyond donating, the church is looking for volunteers to help distribute backpacks on August 22. Volunteers would help from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. as the church distributes supplies, plays music, and provides snacks.
Those interested in helping with the event can call 724-512-5562 for more details. Additionally, the community can check the Genesis Church website for future events, such as blood drives and more drives for families in need.
