Hurricane Ian Shakes Southwest Florida’s Faith But Cannot Destroy It | Religion and values
FORT MYERS, Fla. — As Hurricane Ian approached last week, Jane Compton and her husband — who lost their home and possessions to the storm — found refuge in their Baptist church, huddled with others parishioners through wind, rain and anxiety.
They prayed for the gusts to calm down and for God to keep them from harm as the hurricane made landfall last Wednesday. Floodwaters swept under the pews, driving the congregation to the pulpit and further testing their faith. The intensifying storm tore the steeple from the church, leaving a large void in the roof. The parishioners shivered.
