New York City school staff approach new COVID vaccine deadline in protest

New York City (WABC) – The COVID vaccine requirement for New York school staff is expected to go into effect Friday at 5 p.m.

The new order will be issued after the court dismissed the city’s temporary suspension of vaccination obligations earlier this week.

This represents an overwhelming victory over the city and its vaccination mission.

The Federal Court of Appeal not only ruled in favor of the city, but the three-judge panel did not even hold a hearing.

“Vaccination is the most powerful tool in the fight against COVID-19. This decision is on the right side of the law and protects students and staff, ”the city’s education ministry said in a statement.

New York City reported that 90% of teachers and 97% of principals have taken at least one photo, but the number of other school staff is only 87%.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says he doesn’t care.

“These vaccination obligations are working, the deadlines are working and people are on the move. I spoke last Friday-Saturday, but there were 7,000 other vaccinations at the Ministry of Education, ”he said. ..

Michael Marguerite, president of the United Teachers Federation, said after investigating some of the members, only a third believed the school could open without interruption.

“The city is doing a lot of work before that to make sure it has enough vaccinated staff by the new deadline,” he said in a statement.

The teacher’s lawyer said in a document submitted to the Second Circuit on Monday that a teacher placed on unpaid leave because he did not comply with the order would be irreparably damaged if the appeals court did not not blocking the prescription. Insisted on suffering.

The city ordinance “will prevent teachers and associates from having the resources to pay rent, utilities and other necessities.” Evil is imminent, ”the lawyer wrote.

They said the mission would leave thousands of children in New York City, the largest school district in the United States, without teachers and other school workers.

“There is imminent and irreparable harm,” said the lawyer.
